Beckham Starts as Milan Win on Penalties

David Beckham made his long awaited debut at AC Milan in Dubai on Tuesday, when the Serie A giants beat Hamburg 4-3 in a penalty shoot out following a 1-1 tie.

The former captain of England started in a midfield that also Milan Andrea Pirlo, Massimo Ambrosini and Ronaldinho, before being replaced at half-time.

Ronaldinho put the Rossoneri ahead with a penalty in the 63rd minutes, but Collin Benjamin equalized four minutes later.

Beckham has joined Milan for three months from Los Angeles Galaxy and Italian hopes his work will help England claim a place in Fabio Capello's team.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said Beckham could be in contention for a berth from their side when the series resumes action in Rome on Sunday after the winter break.

But Ancelotti said after the Dubai that Beckham is still not at his best after more than two months without a game.

Beckham currently has 107 caps and needs one more to equal the 'outfield' record held by Bobby Moore, who was held in flight Jules Rimet trophy in 1966.

England firmly on course for a place in the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham has every incentive to prolong his career.

Milan, meanwhile, must decide whether or not to include Beckham in his plans for Europe have been linked with Werder Bremen in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

The two-legged tie will be played in February and Milan to decide on his team selection in late January when the transfer window closes.

Beckham plans to return to U.S. at the end of March to prepare for the launch of Major League Soccer and will be unavailable from the stages of rooms in Europe.

AC Milan are currently third in the Italian top flight nine points behind city rivals and three between the results from the second placed Juventus.
